George (Sonny) Lee Yount, 84, of McGee, MO, departed this life on April 5, 2024. He was born May 19, 1939, in Commerce, MO, the son of David James and Janie Brown Yount.
He was united in marriage on January 4, 1964, to Glenda Hefner in East St. Louis Illinois. She survives of the home.
Early in their marriage Sonny and Glenda lived in Granite City, IL, where he was employed as a John Deere mechanic, a welder, and an over the road truck driver. In 1972 Sonny and Glenda moved to McGee, MO where they later built their home. After moving to McGee Sonny worked for Mirly Truck Sales in Advance as a mechanic, owned and operated G & G Grocery at Arab, and worked as an over the road truck driver until retiring from Jerry Lipps in Cape Girardeau. Sonny enjoyed fishing as a pastime and was an active member of Zalma Masonic Lodge #545. Sonny attended Puxico General Baptist and was baptized in 2002.
Family preceding him in death were, his parents and one sister, Dianne Lancaster.
Sonny is survived by his wife of 60 years, Glenda and 4 children, James Yount of Wappapello, Sandy (Butch) Hart of McGee, Sherry (Clay) Thompson of Puxico, and Dale (Theresa) Yount of McGee, 5 grandchildren, Leevon (Kadee) DeCourley, Erin (Justin) Caldwell, Clint (Mara) Thompson, David Yount and Denny Yount, 6 great grandchildren, Walker and Tommy Decourley, Garrett, Colton, and Wyatt Caldwell and Amelia Thompson. Next month he would have been blessed with another great granddaughter, Maggie. Sonny also is survived by two sisters, Glenda Downs of Maryville, IL, Nancy Miller of Clearwater, FL and 19 nieces and nephews.
A visitation service will be held on Sunday, April 7 from 5-8 p.m. at Morgan Funeral Chapel in Advance, MO. A Masonic Service will be held at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 8 at 11 a.m. at the chapel with Rev Kenneth Burchard officiating. Burial to follow at New Hope McGee Cemetery in McGee, MO.
