Opal Evora Hovis, 77, of Zalma, passed away March 5, 2025, at Wentzville, MO. She was born July 3, 1947, in St. Louis, the daughter of Edward Phillip and Bessie Juanita Brand Deckerd.
Opal had spent most of her life as a homemaker. Later she retired as an Administrative Assistant for the Missouri Department of Children and Family Services. She had also been a substitute teacher for Zalma Schools. She graduated from Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff and was a member of Phi Kappa Beta. Opal was a member of Turkey Creek General Baptist Church.
Opal loved singing and was a member of the Hovis Quartet. She also enjoyed sewing, baking, crossword puzzles, working with children, she had a green thumb with plants, and gardening. Above all she adored her grandchildren, they were her life.
Opal and Robert Hovis were united in marriage on November 25, 1967, in Hiram, MO, he preceded her in death on February 25, 2023.
Survivors include six daughter, Betsy (Roger) VanGennip of Zalma, Jeannie (Kevin) Harrell of Wentzville, Linda (Joe) Crites of Harviell, Carrie (Matt) Cutsinger of Cape Girardeau, Mary Kay (Adam) Stoneking of Jackson, Cindy (Curt) Wiseman of McGee, a son, Ed (Michelle) Hovis of Zalma, two sisters, Juantia Hedding of Arlington, TX and Mary Ann Lashley of St. Louis, a sister-in-law, Betty Deckerd of Perryville, 18 grandchildren, Torie (Neil) Johnson, Lorie (Preston) Beal, Lacie Clary, Tracie (Kyle) Holden, Evan (Rebecca) Hovis, Brett (Lauren) Hovis, Joseph (Emilia) Crites, Jacob (Samantha) Crites, Gabriella Crites, Annabella Crites, Justus Crites, Jayna (Jeffery) Porter, Marcus Cutsinger, Myah Cutsinger, Nolan Stoneking, Heidi Stoneking, Chloe Wiseman, and Cara Wiseman, and 7 great-grandchildren, Tyson, Adelyn, Quinn, Evrett, Leah, Henry, and Dallas.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother, Jack Deckerd, and great grandchild, Adonis Porter.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Morgan Funeral Home in Advance, MO. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel with Rev. Don Richmann and Rev. Keith Price officiating. Burial will follow at Berrong Cemetery near Zalma, MO.
